The fourth and current wave of the COVID-19 pandemic has created a worrisome landscape for the nursing profession. Nurses across the country report that they no longer feel celebrated as heroes as they did in the early days of the pandemic.
Health care is, at its core, people caring for people. But the pandemic has strained our health care workforce like never before. The Bureau of Labor Statistics found that hospital employment decreased by almost 100,000 from February 2020 to September 2021, and 30% of health care workers have鈥
For nearly two years, our nation鈥檚 hospitals and health systems 鈥 and the gifted, dedicated women and men who lead them 鈥 have fought back relentlessly against a once-in-a-century pandemic.
This time has been hard for many, but it has been especially challenging for doctors, nurses and health care workers. Through it all, they have cared for their communities with compassion and skill. We invite you to thank the women and men at your local hospital or health system for all they do to鈥
The AHA Nov. 22 will launch a national, multi-faceted 鈥渢hank you鈥 campaign to express the organization鈥檚 profound appreciation for our nation鈥檚 hospital and health care workers and reiterate how highly they are valued.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention鈥檚 National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health will host a virtual panel discussion Nov. 18 at 2:30 p.m. ET on protecting the mental health of the nation鈥檚 health care workforce.
