At the same time, some organizations are rewiring their strategies as they integrate with other health systems to serve their communities more efficiently and effectively.</p><p>These trends were developing in real time during last week’s <a href="https://www.jpmorgan.com/about-us/events-conferences/health-care-conference" target="_blank" title="43rd Annual J.P. Morgan Healthcare Conference landing page">J.P. Morgan Healthcare Conference</a>, with artificial intelligence (AI) applications underpinning many of the new and expanding alliances.</p><h2><span>4 Takeaways from the Conference</span></h2><h3><span>1</span> <span>|</span> Enterprise AI applications will grow.</h3><p>A multiyear agreement announced between <a href="https://www.aboutamazon.com/news/aws/aws-general-catalyst-vc-health-care-collaboration" target="_blank" title="Amazon News: AWS and General Catalyst join forces to transform health care with AI">Amazon Web Services (AWS)</a> and venture capital firm <a href="https://www.generalcatalyst.com/" target="_blank" title="General Catalyst homepage">General Catalyst</a> is expected to help speed AI products to market that are enterprise-grade rather than point solutions. Under the partnership, General Catalyst portfolio companies will use AWS’ cloud and other services to build and deliver health care AI tools more quickly.</p><p>General Catalyst portfolio companies <a href="https://www.aidoc.com/" target="_blank" title="Aidoc homepage">Aidoc</a>, which applies AI to medical imaging, and <a href="https://www.commure.com/" target="_blank" title="Commure homepage">Commure</a>, which automates health care workflows, will be the first two companies to participate. The two startups were chosen because they have gained significant traction in the market, Dan Sheeran, general manager for health and life services at AWS, told CNBC.</p><p>Sheeran notes that the partnership between General Catalyst and AWS will stretch over several years, with new tools from Aidoc and Commure coming this year. He said Aidoc is exploring how it can use the cloud to tap data modalities across pathology, cardiology, genomics and other molecular information.</p><p>After spending considerable time evaluating how health care organizations can transform themselves, General Catalyst recognized that AI products need to evolve from point solutions from hundreds or thousands of companies to applications that serve the entire enterprise, said Chris Bischoff, head of global health care investing at General Catalyst.</p><h3><span>2</span> <span>|</span> AI-powered digital pathology will fuel more personalized care.</h3><p>Developing models to detect pathology is essential to diagnosing and determining treatments for many types of cancer and other complex conditions, but historically it has been a slow and manual process. A <a href="https://nvidianews.nvidia.com/news/nvidia-partners-with-industry-leaders-to-advance-genomics-drug-discovery-and-healthcare" target="_blank" title="NVIDIA Newsroom: NVIDIA Partners With Industry Leaders to Advance Genomics, Drug Discovery and Healthcare">new partnership</a> between AI-powered software giant <a href="https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/" target="_blank" title="NVIDIA homepage">Nvidia</a> and <a href="https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/mayo-clinic-launches-mayo-clinic-digital-pathology-to-modernize-pathology-speed-medical-breakthroughs/" target="_blank" title="Mayo Clinic News Network: Mayo Clinic launches Mayo Clinic Digital Pathology to modernize pathology, speed medical breakthroughs">Mayo Clinic</a> is designed to speed the development of pathology foundation models.</p><p>Mayo Clinic’s digital pathology platform houses 20 million whole-slide images and 10 million associated patient records. To accelerate foundation model development on the platform, the health system will deploy Nvidia’s <a href="https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/data-center/technologies/blackwell-architecture/" target="_blank" title="NVIDIA: NVIDIA Blackwell Architecture">DGX Blackwell AI</a> systems and <a href="https://monai.io/" target="_blank" title="Monai homepage">Monai</a>, the company’s health care imaging platform.</p><p>Mayo Clinic and Nvidia say their work will serve as a cornerstone for future AI applications in drug discovery, personalized diagnostics and treatments. The companies will continue to expand this collaboration with Mayo’s clinical and AI expertise and Nvidia <a href="https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/ai-data-science/products/nemo/?ncid=pa-srch-goog-125782" target="_blank" title="NVIDIA: NVIDIA NeMo">Cosmos Nemotron</a> vision language models and NIM microservices to provide more personalized health care experiences, along with predictive and efficient treatment strategies.</p><h3><span>3</span> <span>|</span> Transformation done well can deliver huge improvements.</h3><p>Take the case of Renton, Washington-based <a href="https://www.providence.org/" target="_blank" title="Providence Health System homepage">Providence</a>. The health system shared that its Recover and Renew plan begun three years ago has netted about <a href="https://www.digitalhealthnews.com/providence-reports-1-bn-in-operational-improvements" target="_blank" title="Digital Health News: Providence Reports $1 Bn in Operational Improvements">$1 billion in operational improvements</a>.</p><p>The restructuring and cost-cutting initiatives include reducing the health system’s use of contract workers and patients’ length of stay, organizational restructuring, increasing partnerships with other providers and growing value-based care platforms.</p><p>Providence recently expanded its partnership efforts by forming a <a href="https://blog.providence.org/national-news/providence-and-compassus-announce-joint-venture-for-home-based-care-services" target="_blank" title="Providence: Providence and Compassus announce joint venture for home-based care services">joint venture with home care provider Compassus</a> and participating in the <a href="https://www.truveta.com/truveta-genome-project/" target="_blank" title="Truveta Genome Project homepage">Truveta genome project</a>, which will use AI to help accelerate drug discovery and value-based care. The collaboration boasts the largest and most diverse database of genomic and phenotypic information.</p><p>The health system also launched <a href="https://longitudehealth.org/" target="_blank" title="Longitude Health homepage">Longitude Health</a> in October in collaboration with Baylor Scott & White Health, Memorial Hermann Health System and Novant Health. The initiative is designed to help providers improve care for Medicare Advantage beneficiaries and other patients covered by outcome-based reimbursement models.</p><h3><span>4</span> <span>|</span> Strategic planning may require rewiring your organization.</h3><p>That’s the direction <a href="https://www.advocatehealth.com/" target="_blank" title="Advocate Health homepage">Advocate Health</a> has taken with its new <a href="https://www.fiercehealthcare.com/hospitals/jpm25-look-inside-advocate-healths-rewire-2030-strategy" target="_blank" title="Fierce Healthcare: JPM25: A look inside Advocate Health's Rewire 2030 strategy">Rewire 2030 strategic framework</a>. The initiative is aimed at rewiring operations within the huge health system after Advocate Aurora Health and Atrium Health merged in 2022.</p><p>After bringing together what amounted to four legacy organizations, Advocate Health is now focused on its path forward, built on the “Advocate Way,” CEO Eugene Woods, said at the conference.</p><p>Advocate Health will focus on six strategic priorities to differentiate itself, a Fierce Healthcare report noted:</p><ul><li><strong>Pioneer national service lines.</strong></li><li><strong>Build the country’s leading model for access.</strong></li><li><strong>Unite health care with wellness programs and home health.</strong></li><li><strong>Develop the preeminent model for academics.</strong></li><li><strong>Establish an ecosystem for innovative partnerships.</strong></li><li><strong>Curate a “system of systems.”</strong></li></ul><p>As part of its academic plan, Advocate Health will open the <a href="https://www.northcarolinahealthnews.org/2024/10/02/the-pearl-more-than-a-medical-school/" target="_blank" title="North Carolina Health News: More than a medical school">first medical school campus in Charlotte, North Carolina,</a> with Wake Forest University. This can be accomplished through:</p><ul><li>Refreshing educational materials and approaches.</li><li>Updating workflows and clarifying roles to ensure that processes change with the needs of end users.</li><li>Aligning return-on-investment goals with the broader organizational strategy.</li><li>Engaging front-line managers and informatics teams in their software purchases and rollouts.</li><li>Rigorously vetting and testing new technology for patient safety and workflow compatibility, while focusing on enhancing the user experience to avoid electronic health record (EHR) documentation burdens on clinical staff.</li></ul><p>The <a href="/aha-workforce-scan">AHA's 2025 Health Care Workforce Scan</a> provides insights on how to engage clinicians in your technology strategies.</p><h2><span>The Case for Continuous Training</span></h2><p>Today, leaders are focusing on continuous training that emphasizes not just the use, but the value of new technologies.</p><p>For example, Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston used change-management techniques during a major expansion and EHR system implementation. Leaders selected staff from across the organization to bridge the gap between the project team and their peers, helping to translate high-level project information into practical, day-to-day guidance for their co-workers. They also met regularly to exchange ideas and report issues to the change-management team.</p><p>Leaders also held dress rehearsals to prepare staff, setting up real-life simulations of the new EHR system. Staff practiced using the system and new processes before the actual launch. This helped employees understand what to expect and reduced anxiety. It also allowed the hospital to identify potential problems, like incorrect user settings, before the system went live. This led to smoother transitions and more positive attitudes during major organizational changes.</p><p>For example, hospital leaders compared two business units during the change process. Unit 1, which fully embraced change-management practices, showed significantly better outcomes than Unit 2, which did not. Unit 1’s staff reported feeling more prepared, informed and supported throughout the transition. This was reflected in higher participation rates in such key activities as dress rehearsals, where Unit 1 had more than double the staff engagement of Unit 2.</p><p>Before launching a virtual nurse program, which involved new technology for much of its staff, Inova health system in Falls Church, Virginia, held a two-day innovation accelerator event focused on nurse efficiency and well-being. This involved the nursing team in shaping the program’s standards, which helped staff embrace changes to reduce documentation, support a new virtual nurse care model and increase mobile app use for medication administration.</p><p>Kaiser Permanente found that addressing nurse perceptions of EHR use was as important as optimizing the actual time spent on documentation. Its nurses felt overwhelmed by EHR use, even though data showed they spent less time in the EHR than average. With the understanding that perception of workload affects stress levels and job satisfaction, leaders showed nurses personalized report cards highlighting EHR time relative to patient loads. They directly communicated with overwhelmed clinicians, building connections and showing them data that proved the value of their time spent documenting.</p><p>Anecdotal results showed improved nurse satisfaction and better adaptation to new processes, especially among new nurses. It’s clear that the COVID-19 pandemic has led to a boom in tele-psych services that is here to stay, although questions remain on what will be the effect of the elimination of the emergency edict. According to several surveys, mental health visits continue to be provided virtually (with estimates ranging from over one-third to over half of the visits), in contrast to other specialties where the majority of clinical encounters are returning to in-person care.</p> <p>While mental health services have long been offered via telehealth, and more so than for other service lines, large-scale uptake was stymied by limited reimbursement coverage, especially from governmental payers. That changed once the pandemic took hold, and thankfully that coverage has been extended at the federal level for the time being. Medicaid reimbursement varies from state to state, but all states cover some form of telehealth services.</p> <p>Prior to the pandemic, many providers were unsure if telehealth would be an effective way to provide behavioral health services. After three years, most are sold that the remote platforms are engaging enough and work -- and patients agree, because they continue to ask for those appointments.</p> <p>Telehealth care has also helped break down certain barriers that have long been a problem in health care. Geography, lack of free time and the cost of transportation are all access barriers erased by telehealth services across health care, and especially in behavioral health, where appointments can be difficult to obtain.</p> <p>Another barrier for providing telehealth care prior to the pandemic was restrictions on virtually prescribing controlled substances, including for patients under psychiatric care. The elimination of the public health emergency will again limit a provider’s ability to prescribe controlled substances to a patient they’re caring for through a telehealth platform. This would unfairly stop some patients from utilizing care remotely. The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has proposed rules that will extend certain flexibilities, but the practice of prescribing controlled substances will be more restrictive than what the public health emergency has allowed, necessitating in-person visits for most patients in need of controlled substances like stimulants for Attention Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) or benzodiazepines like Ativan or Valium for anxiety or insomnia.</p> <p>During the pandemic, many states temporarily allowed practitioners from other states to provide telehealth services. This allowed patients in underserved areas, or with a need for specialty care, to reach providers they would otherwise not have had access to. As we build the care in the future, we need to solve for the issue of telehealth services stopping at state lines.</p> <p>Just as patients have embraced telehealth, caregivers have also found the service to be highly effective. As we shift toward a post-pandemic world, let’s not lose sight of all that we’ve learned about caring for patients during this difficult time, when demand for mental health services has risen to record levels. This demand isn’t going away, which is why we can’t limit how we care for patients.</p> <p>Beyond the impact on telehealth, the declaration of end of PHE also is a statement on returning to normal service. But as we settle into this new normal of the post-PHE world, we must continue to raise awareness for the ongoing need for mental health services. Our work is not finished.</p> <p>The pandemic laid bare the disparities in clinical outcomes in historically underserved communities. We must advocate for access to high bandwidth internet for all and for culturally competent telehealth for our diverse communities. Furthermore, we need to train more clinical professionals that are representative of the communities we serve. Even before the pandemic, we faced a limited workforce of trained clinical professionals. Our delivery care system needs substantial investments, especially in minority communities, to provide culturally competent care.</p> <p>The pandemic helped with decreasing stigma associated with accessing mental health care. We need to maintain this momentum by supporting easy access to effective care. Designing health technology to meet the needs of these individuals is a fundamental pathway to improve health equity. Yet discussions around health equity rarely focus on technology, while discussions around health technology rarely focus on equity. The only National Cancer Institute (NCI) designated comprehensive cancer center in Florida, Moffitt cares for people from all over the country and around the world. <strong>Edmondo Robinson, M.D., MBA, MS, FACP, senior vice president and chief digital officer at Moffitt Cancer Center spoke with Julia Resnick, director of strategic initiatives at the Association</strong> about how Moffitt’s approach to digital health improves equity for the patients they serve. <em>This interview has been edited and condensed for clarity.</em></p> <p><span><strong><em>What does digital health equity mean to you?</em></strong></span></p> <p><span><strong>Dr. Robinson:</strong></span> You have three loaded terms: digital, health and equity. So, let’s start with health equity – the idea that every person should have the opportunity to attain their full health status without being disadvantaged by social platform position or socially determined circumstances.</p> <p>Digital is very broad. It encompasses everything from broadband to hardware to telemedicine to artificial intelligence to leveraging predictive tools and predictive analytics to remote patient monitoring to digital therapeutics, to social media, apps, connected devices and wearables. But also think about robotic process automation; being able to automate your processes within your back office, so that you can be much more efficient.</p> <p>Now, if you put the digital lens on health equity, what we are saying is that digital health access is a socially determined circumstance. So, if health equity is the ability to attain your full potential for health without being encumbered by social determinants, and digital is a social determinant, therefore, digital health equity is the ability to fulfill your best health potential without being encumbered by lack of access to digital tools and technology.</p> <p><span><strong><em>Why is digital health equity a priority for Moffitt?</em></strong></span></p> <p><span><strong>Dr. Robinson:</strong></span> As part of Moffitt’s mission, our job is to present cutting-edge treatments in the quest to prevent and cure cancer; digital is increasingly going to be a tool in the toolbox to get there. We must leverage digital as a core tool for all those that we care for − not just for people who have money, who have insurance or jobs. That means that equity is core to our mission and values − to make sure that we are reaching all of those that need our services.</p> <p><span><strong><em>What is Moffitt’s Center for Digital Health?</em></strong></span></p> <p><span><strong>Dr. Robinson:</strong></span> The Center for Digital Health is a unique structure for a health care provider, certainly in the cancer center space. We are creating a structure around technology to support the entire enterprise. And we do not have a separate digital strategy. Our approach is to develop an enterprise-wide strategy that leverages and is enabled by digital. For example, the more efficient we are in a back office by leveraging digital technology, the more we can focus on direct clinical care and research.</p> <p>The Center for Digital Health has three complementary departments. The core is the information technology (IT) department, led by our chief information officer, and contains all the elements that comprise a typical IT department in a health system, including cybersecurity, application support and infrastructure. The other two areas are a bit more unique. One is health data services, which is led by our chief data officer who is focused on using data as a tool to drive discovery, clinical care and optimal business processes. The third is the digital innovation department where we focus on ideating and creating the technology assets of the future – thinking about everything from the consumer voice and their needs to robotic process automation and remote patient monitoring. Those three departments work interdependently to drive the Center for Digital Health.</p> <p><span><strong><em>How is the Center driving digital health equity?</em></strong></span></p> <p><span><strong>Dr. Robinson:</strong></span> We've been focused on digital access because access is a core component of digital equity. That may mean access to broadband, hardware, knowledge and more. Additionally, digital literacy is an important concept. There is also a design component in making digital tools equitable – everything from language translation options to font size for the visually impaired. It is increasingly important to bake equity into the design of digital tools.</p> <p>Something else we are exploring is how we can use digital tools to decrease some of the disparities that we have in health care delivery. For example, as an NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center, we do a significant amount of research, including clinical trials. But can we explore an opportunity to increase the diversity of the clinical trial participants by leveraging an AI clinical trials matching tool?</p> <p>A recent project with our Center was the use of digital tools for engagement and outreach. It was a quick 2-3 week pilot project focused on breast cancer screening in predominantly African American communities where women are disproportionately affected by breast cancer. By leveraging digital tools, we were able to increase our engagement by about 25 times and we developed 10 times as many partnerships as we would have otherwise been able to. We've projected that we could possibly increase our screening by 1,300 women based on the work from this pilot project alone. That's the power of the digital tools if you really leverage them to focus on equity.</p> <p><span><strong><em>What do you think that hospitals across the country can do on digital health equity and what is their role in this space?</em></strong></span></p> <p><span><strong>Dr. Robinson:</strong></span> First you just need to identify that digital health equity is an issue. You have to acknowledge that 1) digital is important and 2) that equity is important. If your hospital has not identified equity as a core component of what you do, then you've got to start there. And if your hospital hasn’t identified digital as a core tool that you're going to leverage moving forward then you must go there as well. So, if digital is important and equity is important, then digital equity should be equally important. The next step is what you are going to do about it. Inclusion of digital health equity in your strategic planning is critically important. It seems like a simple first step, but it serves as a prerequisite for any future activities.</p> <p><span><strong><em>How do you make the case to health care leaders that digital health equity is a worthwhile investment?</em></strong></span></p> <p><span><strong>Dr. Robinson:</strong></span> Because of the equity piece, much of this work is mission driven. But there are two scenarios at play: one where you don't want to be behind and there is one where you could be ahead. If you have not started to develop a strategy that leverages digital you're going to be behind. But the other case is if you become really good at digital, you're going to be more efficient and effective. And as you are managing populations and taking on risk, if you want to manage larger populations you need to leverage digital tools that you can scale with much more efficiency. You are going to improve your quality, your engagement, your outreach – and ultimately you will improve equity. </p><p> </p> <p><span><strong>What are your recommendations for health care leaders who want to get started in digital health equity?</strong></span></p> <p><span><strong>Dr. Robinson:</strong></span> I think it goes back to this idea of having strategies around digital and health equity. I'm going make an assumption that health equity is somewhere in your mission. You absolutely cannot assume that the digital folks know anything about health equity, especially if you bring them in from outside of health care. On the other side, the health equity experts may not know much about digital. That bi-directional learning can be very powerful.</p> <p>This work requires leadership and investment in the people, tools, technology and infrastructure to build a digital core. Once you have your leadership and your investments in digital, you need to make sure that your mission-driven focus on health equity is baked into the digital aspects that you're building out. Then you hold your digital leadership accountable to that mission around health equity. Organizations that proclaim the importance of digital but do not have an identified digital senior leader are just talking, they aren’t doing.</p> <p><span><strong><em>Any parting words of wisdom?</em></strong></span></p> <p><span><strong>Dr. Robinson:</strong></span> The time to start is now. Go for it. We are all trying to build the plane in the air. There might be some stumbles along the way, but we need to understand how to learn from those failures so that we improve over time. Being overly risk averse in digital holds us back from setting high goals and innovating.
