Morgan Healthcare Conference. A clinician reviewing health data, a robotic hand controlled by AI, a microscope." width="100%" height="100%">

As health care executives continue to reimagine and reshape their organizations to achieve financial sustainability, many are forging partnerships to achieve their goals. At the same time, some organizations are rewiring their strategies as they integrate with other health systems to serve their communities more efficiently and effectively.

These trends were developing in real time during last week’s J.P. Morgan Healthcare Conference, with artificial intelligence (AI) applications underpinning many of the new and expanding alliances.

4 Takeaways from the Conference

1 | Enterprise AI applications will grow.

A multiyear agreement announced between Amazon Web Services (AWS) and venture capital firm General Catalyst is expected to help speed AI products to market that are enterprise-grade rather than point solutions. Under the partnership, General Catalyst portfolio companies will use AWS’ cloud and other services to build and deliver health care AI tools more quickly.

General Catalyst portfolio companies Aidoc, which applies AI to medical imaging, and Commure, which automates health care workflows, will be the first two companies to participate. The two startups were chosen because they have gained significant traction in the market, Dan Sheeran, general manager for health and life services at AWS, told CNBC.

Sheeran notes that the partnership between General Catalyst and AWS will stretch over several years, with new tools from Aidoc and Commure coming this year. He said Aidoc is exploring how it can use the cloud to tap data modalities across pathology, cardiology, genomics and other molecular information.

After spending considerable time evaluating how health care organizations can transform themselves, General Catalyst recognized that AI products need to evolve from point solutions from hundreds or thousands of companies to applications that serve the entire enterprise, said Chris Bischoff, head of global health care investing at General Catalyst.

2 | AI-powered digital pathology will fuel more personalized care.

Developing models to detect pathology is essential to diagnosing and determining treatments for many types of cancer and other complex conditions, but historically it has been a slow and manual process. A new partnership between AI-powered software giant Nvidia and Mayo Clinic is designed to speed the development of pathology foundation models.

Mayo Clinic’s digital pathology platform houses 20 million whole-slide images and 10 million associated patient records. To accelerate foundation model development on the platform, the health system will deploy Nvidia’s DGX Blackwell AI systems and Monai, the company’s health care imaging platform.

Mayo Clinic and Nvidia say their work will serve as a cornerstone for future AI applications in drug discovery, personalized diagnostics and treatments. The companies will continue to expand this collaboration with Mayo’s clinical and AI expertise and Nvidia Cosmos Nemotron vision language models and NIM microservices to provide more personalized health care experiences, along with predictive and efficient treatment strategies.

3 | Transformation done well can deliver huge improvements.

Take the case of Renton, Washington-based Providence. The health system shared that its Recover and Renew plan begun three years ago has netted about $1 billion in operational improvements.

The restructuring and cost-cutting initiatives include reducing the health system’s use of contract workers and patients’ length of stay, organizational restructuring, increasing partnerships with other providers and growing value-based care platforms.

Providence recently expanded its partnership efforts by forming a joint venture with home care provider Compassus and participating in the Truveta genome project, which will use AI to help accelerate drug discovery and value-based care. The collaboration boasts the largest and most diverse database of genomic and phenotypic information.

The health system also launched Longitude Health in October in collaboration with Baylor Scott & White Health, Memorial Hermann Health System and Novant Health. The initiative is designed to help providers improve care for Medicare Advantage beneficiaries and other patients covered by outcome-based reimbursement models.

4 | Strategic planning may require rewiring your organization.

That’s the direction Advocate Health has taken with its new Rewire 2030 strategic framework. The initiative is aimed at rewiring operations within the huge health system after Advocate Aurora Health and Atrium Health merged in 2022.

After bringing together what amounted to four legacy organizations, Advocate Health is now focused on its path forward, built on the “Advocate Way,” CEO Eugene Woods, said at the conference.

Advocate Health will focus on six strategic priorities to differentiate itself, a Fierce Healthcare report noted:

Pioneer national service lines.

Build the country’s leading model for access.

Unite health care with wellness programs and home health.

Develop the preeminent model for academics.

Establish an ecosystem for innovative partnerships.

Curate a “system of systems.”

As part of its academic plan, Advocate Health will open the first medical school campus in Charlotte, North Carolina, with Wake Forest University. The team plans to build an innovation district around the medical center. “The Pearl,” as it will be named, will serve as a mixed-use space for community residents, and multiple scientific companies have said they will take up residence in the building to enhance the student experience.

.field_featured_image { position: absolute; overflow: hidden; clip: rect(0 0 0 0); height: 1px; width: 1px; margin: -1px; padding: 0; border: 0; } .featured-image{ position: absolute; overflow: hidden; clip: rect(0 0 0 0); height: 1px; width: 1px; margin: -1px; padding: 0; border: 0; } h2 { color: #9d2235; } Tue, 21 Jan 2025 06:15:00 -0600 Personalization 3 Ways to Reimagine Care Delivery to Support Your Workforce /aha-center-health-innovation-market-scan/2024-11-26-3-ways-reimagine-care-delivery-support-your-workforce

Hospitals and health systems continue to focus on enhancing support and fostering resilience among a thinly stretched, post-pandemic workforce. Facilities across the country are investing in artificial intelligence (AI) technology and tech skills development to alleviate burden and enhance flexibility. Many also are reimagining care delivery models.

The recently released AHA 2025 Health Care Workforce Scan provides a comprehensive review of these and other issues, including:

Engaging clinicians in technology strategies.

Boosting access through partnerships, training and upskilling.

Rethinking engagement to build a more flexible, engaged workforce.

The workforce scan is based on the latest reports, studies and other data sources and offers valuable insights into the workforce landscape, as well as practical guidance from experts and peers to help your organization navigate the future of the health care workforce.

Embrace Technologically Integrated Care Models

Amid high provider burnout and financial pressure, hospital leaders are embracing technology, including AI, as a transformative tool. More established technologies like virtual care, telesitting and remote patient monitoring continue to support front-line staff and expand access in integrated care models. These tools show promise in boosting staff retention, efficiency and care quality.

AI applications are expanding rapidly across many clinical and operations areas. Ohio-based University Hospitals Health System, for example, has deployed an AI platform with more than 30 care pathways to quickly identify conditions like pulmonary embolism, coronary artery calcification and intracranial hemorrhaging. Others are using AI to produce faster results in cancer screenings. And generative AI, while still being evaluated for its accuracy and optimal uses, is reducing clinician workloads in clinical documentation and creating patient summaries.

Leaders have found value through other applications, including:

Personalizing treatment: Machine learning can automate complicated statistical work and discover which characteristics indicate that a patient will have a particular response to a given treatment.

Identifying infection risks: AI applications can help predict when a patient’s immune system may have an overwhelming and potentially dangerous response to an infection. AI also can assess dozens of variables at one time, track a patient’s vital signs to detect sepsis risk earlier and enable clinicians to respond more quickly.

Enhancing disease detection: AI can help automate time-consuming tasks like tracing tumors and measuring amounts of fat and muscle.

3 Technologically Integrated Care Models to Explore

Sentara Health | Norfolk, Virginia

Research shows that nurses who feel overworked or unable to finish their tasks are more likely to burn out and quit. Sentara Health developed the Patient Acuity Nursing Tool (PANT) to improve nurse-patient assignments by objectively assessing nursing workloads and patient acuity.

Traditional methods relied on the clinical judgment of charge nurses and patient census data, often leading to imbalanced workloads. The PANT algorithm, created by an interdisciplinary team at Sentara, integrates real-time patient data to distribute nursing tasks equitably. The health system has implemented it across 100 inpatient units, supported by training materials and orientation programs. The tool helps charge nurses make more informed assignments, reduces nurse burnout and enhances patient care by providing a validated measure of nursing workload.

Stanford Medicine | Palo Alto, California

Stanford Medicine researchers implemented an AI-based model at Stanford Hospital that predicts patient deterioration and facilitates better collaboration between physicians and nurses. The model analyzes real-time patient data every 15 minutes and sends alerts to care teams when a patient is at risk of decline.

While the model isn’t perfect, with about 20% accuracy in predicting actual deterioration events, it led to a 10.4% decrease in deterioration events among high-risk patients. The AI model serves as a communication facilitator, prompting important conversations among clinicians that might not otherwise occur due to busy schedules.

Ochsner Medical Center | Jefferson, Louisiana

The Medical Center used data science to improve patient safety. It created a neural network model using information from 250,000 hospital stays to predict Clostridioides difficile infections. The data revealed that stomach acid-reducing medicines increased infection risk more than expected.

Now, Ochsner’s system flags high-risk patients, giving pharmacists the opportunity to advise its doctors on medication use (often suggesting using these medicines less or stopping them). This new approach cut C. difficile infections by half, prevented 166 infections and saved $4 million in two years.

3 Things to Think About

How will you integrate AI within your existing technology infrastructure, particularly the electronic health record?

How will you monitor and evaluate the performance and impact of AI technologies over time, including potential unintended consequences or biases?

How can you proactively identify and alleviate issues that add to clinical burden?

Download the 2025 AHA Health Care Workforce Scan.

.field_featured_image { position: absolute; overflow: hidden; clip: rect(0 0 0 0); height: 1px; width: 1px; margin: -1px; padding: 0; border: 0; } .featured-image{ position: absolute; overflow: hidden; clip: rect(0 0 0 0); height: 1px; width: 1px; margin: -1px; padding: 0; border: 0; } h2 { color: #9d2235; } ol.red li.red::marker { color: #9d2235; font-weight: bold; } Tue, 26 Nov 2024 06:15:00 -0600 Personalization Closing the Loop on Patient Feedback: Lessons from CVS Health /aha-center-health-innovation-market-scan/2024-04-16-closing-loop-patient-feedback-lessons-cvs-health

The push to improve the patient experience is ubiquitous. From traditional points of care in hospitals and health systems to retail settings and telehealth, providers are trying to connect millions of data points to measure consumer feedback so they can create more personalized, responsive systems with better service.

In a recent podcast, leaders from Deloitte Digital and CVS Health shared insights on how they are working together to quickly close the loop on customer feedback to better personalize care, respond faster to service recovery opportunities and build trust.

The retail giant now captures 17 million pieces of solicited feedback yearly through its customer experience-management platform and has implemented more than 130 survey programs across digital, transactional and relationship touch points, notes one report.

While the work between the partners is far from finished, the early results provide a glimpse into how CVS is adapting its thinking as it analyzes its vast consumer data — both direct (e.g., customer surveys) and indirect (e.g., online chat transcripts, call transcripts and digital session data).

These insights also provide a framework for hospital and health system executives as they look to optimize ways to measure, report and act on patient experience data.

3 Takeaways from the CVS Health-Deloitte Consumer Experience Project

1 | Recognize the new standard in health consumer experience.

The aperture of how health consumers view their point of comparison has changed, says Srikant Narasimhan, vice president of enterprise customer experience at CVS Health. Consumers no longer simply evaluate providers or any company against traditional competitors. Their frame of reference is now based on the best customer experiences they have had in any field, he says.

Takeaway

This may seem intuitive, but it is a significant issue for health care leaders to accept as they develop and execute their patient experience-management strategies. It’s easy to become too focused on comparing one organization or facility against other hospitals and health systems in a region. Expand your vision to focus on delivering service levels that meet patients’ best experiences.

2 | Scale and process consumer experience data.

It’s easy to drown in data. The goal is to eliminate the noise from the signal that patients are giving you in their feedback, says Tim Greulich, customer experience-management practice leader at Deloitte Digital. A confluence of factors is leading to greater amounts of consumer information being collected. The challenge for providers will be how to scale and process these data so that appropriate actions can be taken quickly in areas like service recovery.

Takeaway

Applications exist that can reside on top of huge databases to capture and process data, Greulich says. These applications can move at the speed of humans and provide the ability to compile this information and orchestrate personalized experiences both online and offline with consumers in ways that they are rapidly coming to expect. Address complaints quickly. Build trust and loyalty with a true feedback loop: “We heard you and these are the things we are doing to make things better for you.”

3 | Identify opportunities to wow patients.

Using consumer data in ways that meet legal and privacy standards is a given. But it’s also important that the process of trying to be more personalized in the use of consumer data doesn’t feel overly intrusive or resemble Big Brother, Narasimhan says.

Takeaway

Find targeted opportunities to add value in personalization, not just an opportunity to cross-sell services. Be proactive. Focus on how to find the right opportunities to wow, surprise or delight patients. Examples could include improving responsiveness of hospital staff to patients, reducing wait times or revamping food options for patients.

In trying to address patient concerns about lengthy discharge processes, some organizations — like New York City-based Montefiore Health System’s Moses campus — have opened discharge lounges. Montefiore’s lounge, located near the hospital’s front lobby, is staffed by certified nurse assistants who act as discharge lounge coordinators. They pick up patients from their rooms and escort them to the lounge, where they can watch TV or enjoy free snacks as the discharge process is completed. A report from last August notes that Montefiore had saved more than 10,000 bed hours and the average patient stay in the lounge was only 35 minutes.

Learn More

The May 1 AHA Leadership Scan episode “Optimizing the Patient Experience in a Digital World” will examine how to leverage technology to engage and educate consumers at all points in their health care journey. Each report is supported with data from a 2022 survey of health care leaders.

Leverage AI to Personalize Care

Delivering more personalized health care depends on being able to segment and understand the differences in experiences among age, racial and ethnic groups, notes Chrissy Daniels, chief experience officer of Press Ganey Associates. Daniels and her colleague Joan Kelly partner in strategic planning at Press Ganey, provide insights on age generations and other important demographic groups such as the LBGTQ+ community and people of color.

“Creating personalization in health care is reliant upon being able to segment and understand the differences in experiences, rather than the aggregation of experiences,” Daniels notes.

<img alt="Health Care Executives Were Asked: By 2028, will your hospital or health system be equipped to use machine learning/AI algorithms to drive care management for all patients that they serve? The latest Futurescan survey data show that most responding organizations are in the middle of this journey. Fifty-nine percent said it was very likely or somewhat likely that their organization would be equipped to use machine learning or AI algorithms to drive care management for all their patients by 2028; only 2% report already using AI.

Key Takeaways to Personalize Care by Generation

Health care executives will need to know the current experiences among various generational cohorts and how to meet their specific needs, including:

1 | Baby Boomers (born between 1946 and 1964)

This unique group wants the best and their demands have transformed areas like senior living, leisure and recreation. Concierge and luxury health care emerged because baby boomers want high-touch services, Daniels says, noting that this creates a growth opportunity for health care organizations.

Takeaway

Baby boomers have a high degree of confidence in brands that convey quality and are willing to pay for name-brand patient experiences. As a result, the market for destination medicine is likely to grow.

2 | Gen X (born between 1965 and 1981)

Gen Xers are a silent but emerging demographic for patient acquisition, Kelly says. This cohort, more than any other, is handling multigenerational patient direction for their own children and often their parents. Health care organizations will need to respond by coordinating care in a family-convenient way.

Takeaway

As more care moves into the home setting and family members take on a greater role as caregivers, Gen Xers will need more support from health care organizations.

3 | Millenials (born between 1981 and 1996)

Now the largest living adult generation in the U.S., millennials generally have been healthy and less insured than earlier cohorts. They value convenience first and foremost. They look for care close to where they want to receive it, need to know wait times, want to be able to message providers and find hours and reviews online.

Takeaway

Identifying all the locations affiliated with your organization and optimizing your presence on Google Maps has never been more important, Kelly says.

4 | Gen Z (born between 1996 and 2012)

This age bracket has the highest percentage of young adults living at home in the post-World War II era, Daniels notes. They are likely to be covered by their parents’ health insurance and often defer care decisions to their mothers. They are comfortable with both virtual care and text-based care and are less likely to engage in face-to-face, in-person care.

Takeaway

This generation is more willing to seek care for behavioral health issues, particularly among transgender individuals, Daniels says. CVS will tap into Microsoft’s Azure cloud computing, artificial intelligence and other technologies to speed its digital-first strategy. CVS will migrate 1,500 new and existing business applications onto Azure and work with Microsoft to build more consumer-facing health tools.

CVS already has used Azure to automate such tasks as deploying computer vision and text analytics to help digitize intake for specialty pharmacy when prescriptions arrive by paper or fax, making it more efficient and quicker to fill orders. CVS will work with Microsoft to find more ways to streamline processes. CVS will use Microsoft products like Teams for videoconferencing and Microsoft Office.

The partnership also supports CVS’ rapidly evolving health care strategy. The company last month said it plans to close 900 stores over the next three years as it reevaluates its in-person retail strategy as more consumers make digital purchases. Meanwhile, CVS’ retail health clinics have been gaining traction, reporting a 600% surge between 2019 and 2020 via telehealth and a sharp rise in home prescription delivery.

.field_featured_image { position: absolute;
