Robot arms in a surgery room." width="1200" height="751"></p><p>About four months ago, the University of South Florida and Tampa General Hospital expanded their <a href="https://www.tgh.org/news/tgh-press-releases/2024/november/tampa-general-usf-health-bring-world-most-precise-robotic-surgical-technology-florida" target=" title=" tampa general and usf health to bring most precise robotic surgical technology>partnership</a> with Medical Microinstruments Inc. (MMI) to bring the company’s Symani Surgical System to the academic medical center.</p><p>MMI states that the robotic surgical device pushes the limits of soft-tissue open surgery, giving surgeons greater precision and control. It also gives surgeons the chance to restore the quality of life for more patients, including those with cancer-related lymphedema (swelling of body tissues due to lymph fluid buildup) who need microvascular and lymphatic repair.</p><p>Cleveland Clinic, New York University, the University of Pennsylvania and Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles also are using the system.</p><h2>The Expanding Reach of Surgical Robotics</h2><p>Specialized uses like this illustrate the ever-expanding applications of robotic surgery platforms as health care providers continue to leverage the technology to reduce surgical complications, improve safety, shorten recovery times for patients, reduce length of stay and more.</p><p>At the same time, robotic surgery platforms like Intuitive Surgical’s pioneering da Vinci system and its latest offering, da Vinci 5, competing systems from Stryker, Medtronic and Johnson & Johnson are broadening their capabilities in operating rooms.</p><p>Since gaining the first FDA clearance nearly 25 years ago, da Vinci robots now are routinely used in many laparoscopic soft-tissue procedures, including cardiac, urologic, gynecologic and general surgeries. The company reports that about 2.63 million surgical procedures were performed in the U.S. last year using da Vinci systems — a 17% increase from 2023.</p><p>Artificial intelligence (AI) also is being integrated into robotic surgery devices to automate surgical tasks like suturing or tissue dissection. Stryker and Zimmer Biomet are adding shoulder features to their surgical robots, the report notes. Spine surgery also has the potential to benefit from an expanding focus on robotics, according to Wang.</p><p>Jeffrey Brand, executive director at global architecture and design firm Perkins Eastman, recently told ASC News that his firm established a 16-surgical-suite ambulatory center focused on robotic surgery for cancer patients. The training uses live actors rather than avatars or animation, creating a powerful and emotional experience like those palliative care professionals face almost every day.</p> <p>The platform allows caregivers to practice these crucial conversations in a safe space while maintaining the emotions and intensity that make this challenging in the care environment, says Anjali Grandhige, Wellstar’s palliative medicine director.</p> <h2><span>Investing in Collaborative Innovation</span></h2> <p>The Compassionate Conversations training came about through a <a href="https://catalyst.wellstar.org/groundbreaking-compassionate-conversations-virtual-reality-training-debuts-at-hlth-2023/" target="_blank" title="Catalyst by Wellstar: Groundbreaking “Compassionate Conversations” Virtual Reality Training Debuts at HLTH 2023">collaboration</a> between <a href="https://www.wellstar.org/" target="_blank" title="Wellstar Health System homepage.">Wellstar Health</a> and VR communications technology startup <a href="https://www.mothandflamevr.com/" target="_blank" title="Moth+Flame homepage.">Moth+Flame</a>. <a href="https://catalyst.wellstar.org/" target="_blank" title="Catalyst by Wellstar homepage.">Catalyst by Wellstar</a>, the innovation arm of Wellstar Health System, helped fund the startup.</p> <p>Catalyst by Wellstar is a $100 million venture fund launched by the parent health system in May. It aims to make more than 50 investments — from pre-seed to Series A rounds — over the next five years. Investments will target companies addressing issues like customer experience, data analytics and security, digital health, workforce, supply chain, logistics and sustainability.</p> <p>The Moth+Flame investment illustrates Wellstar’s focus on being more than an innovation financier. The health system, which provides care for 1.6 million Georgians annually and provided $1.2 billion in uncompensated care last year, works shoulder to shoulder with many of the startups it helps to fund.</p> <h2><span>Bringing Robotics to Surgical Instrument Sterilization</span></h2> <p>Catalyst by Wellstar’s investment this month in <a href="https://www.rifrobotics.com/" target="_blank" title="RIF Robotics homepage.">RIF Robotics</a> is another example of the venture fund’s strategic partnership with a company to which it provides seed money. The fund’s investment with the tech startup focused on improving the sterile processing of surgical instruments with the aid of robots and includes a <a href="https://catalyst.wellstar.org/rif-robotics-pilot-aims-to-improve-patient-and-team-member-safety-in-sterile-processing/" target="_blank" title="Catalyst by Wellstar: RIF Robotics Pilot Aims to Improve Patient and Team Member Safety in Sterile Processing">pilot with RIF</a> to further refine its technology with feedback from Wellstar staff on the front lines of sterile processing.</p> <p>More than 51 million surgeries are performed in the United States every year with each one requiring between three and 30 instrument trays. Mistakes in sterile processing can lead to unsafe outcomes for patients and medical staff with estimated costs of $25 billion in operating room delays.</p> <p>By year-end, RIF aims to achieve the automated assembly of a basic surgical tray before launching the robots for broad commercialization. The pilot with Wellstar will employ artificial intelligence (AI), computer vision and robotics to automate the sterilization of instruments used in hospitals. Efforts are underway at many organizations to enable and ease booking online appointments or other information that helps direct patients to the right care at the right time.</p> <p>While these are important improvements that expand access and increase convenience, three-quarters of all people search the internet for health information before entering the health care system, said Karen DeSalvo, M.D., Google’s chief health officer.</p> <p>The most successful health care providers recognize the opportunity to move patients from “Dr. Google” to the appropriate care site in a seamless way.</p> <h3>2 <span>|</span> <span>Embrace the robots.</span></h3> <p>Robotics in health care have been around for decades, but the next generation of robots and cobots, or collaborative robots, on display at the festival showed great promise for solving problems facing both patients and clinicians.</p> <p><a href="https://news.d.umn.edu/news-center/articles/pepper-robot-2019" target="_blank" title="University of Minnesota Duluth News Center: A Job for Dr. Pepper">Pepper</a>, a robot developed at a University of Minnesota-Duluth (UMD) lab, helps elderly patients with social and cognitive engagement. Arshia Khan, UMD computer science professor, and her students programmed the robot to serve as a personal, caregiver assistant for people with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia.</p> <p>Pepper loves a good conversation and even tells jokes — a top request among residents in the nursing home where she was first tested. The robot is equipped with camera sensors that allow it to detect a patient’s facial expressions, voice tone and physical movements. Designed by two robotics experts at Diligent Robotics, <a href="https://www.diligentrobots.com/moxi" target="_blank" title="Diligent Robotics: Moxi landing page">Moxi</a> is the first in-production robot that uses artificial intelligence and continuously adapts to changes in hospital workflows by learning from the humans with whom it interacts. After just seven weeks, the two Moxis deployed at ChristianaCare have saved nurses an estimated 600 hours of work, said Janice Nevin, M.D., MPH, president and CEO.</p> <p>While the deployment of robots to aid patients or staff is in its early phases, the use cases illustrate the possibility of augmenting the strained health care workforce while freeing up humans to practice at the top of their licenses.</p> <h3>3 <span>|</span> <span>Replace transactional care with longitudinal relationships.</span></h3> <p>Current health care delivery modes are “fundamentally designed to capture failures of chronic care,” said Omar Lateef, D.O., president and CEO, Rush and Rush University Medical Center, at an AHA-convened panel on the future of care delivery.
