Yale New Haven Health doctors lead weekly walks to promote healthy activity
Yale New Haven Hospital in Connecticut partners with Get Healthy CT for "Walk & Talk with a Doc," an opportunity on Saturday mornings for community members to walk with YNHH physicians and discuss specific health care topics. The Yale Primary Care Internal Medicine and Medicine/Pediatrics Residency program at YNHH also is a partner.
Launched in 2016, these weekly walks cover about two miles on flat terrain and are free and open to anybody of any fitness level. The walking route stretches through New Haven鈥檚 Newhallville neighborhood and parts of southern Hamden.
Newhallville is a historically marginalized community where residents tend to have poor health outcomes. The goal of the physician-led walks is to 鈥渆ngage members from [the] community around physical activity.鈥 The participating physicians 鈥 all volunteers 鈥 also deliver a 鈥淢edical Minute鈥 on such topics as safely storing and disposing of medications, the importance of getting more fiber in one鈥檚 diet, and the effects of exercise on mental health.
