While the doctors, nurses and care teams of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta are focused on helping their youthful patients get better at Arthur M. Blank Hospital, much of the heavy lifting of day-to-day operations is done by a cadre of unpaid workers who never tire and never complain.

Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta has introduced a fleet of 90 robots in the hospital to improve operational efficiency and manage the expanded space. The robots perform various tasks such as delivering food, supplies, medication, and even taking out the trash. They navigate the hospital using 3D models created by light detection and ranging, ensuring they avoid collisions with people. The mechanical crew is monitored from a control room in the hospital’s basement, where staff can track their locations and tasks in real-time.

Despite concerns about job displacement, the hospital staff emphasizes that the robots are intended to supplement the workload rather than replace human workers. The robots have kid-friendly designs and are integrated into the hospital’s daily routines, making supply runs and other tasks more efficient. Staff members appreciate the time-saving benefits and foresee more hospitals adopting similar technology in the future.
