Column: Strategic thinking, decision-making crucial to nurse leadership 

A changing workplace requires nurse executives to be open to possibilities, constantly test new ideas and take advantage of new learning opportunities, two past AONE board chairs write in this month’s Journal of Nursing Administration. The AONE Leadership Perspectives by Kathleen Sanford, executive vice president and chief nursing officer for CommonSpirit Health in San Francisco, and Michelle Janney, EVP and CNO at Indiana University Health in Indianapolis, reviews the importance of strategic thinking and decision making, executive presence, and innovation and change leadership.  

Nurse helps save collapsed man on dance floor

A nurse from New Jersey recently helped save a man's life at a music venue in New Orleans, NOLA.com . Nurse Laura Pizzano, who was on the dance floor when the man collapsed, said she gave the man mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and took turns pumping his chest, and that an emergency defibrillator in the dance hall was key to his survival. 

Executive moves

Howard County General Hospital in Columbia, Md., part of Johns Hopkins Medicine, has  Jennifer Baldwin vice president of nursing and CNO. Baldwin was previously senior vice president of patient-centered medical home and care management at CareFirst, a Maryland-based insurer.

St. John’s Medical Center in Jackson, Wyo., has Marsha Sensat CNO. Sensat most recently served as CNO at Pikes Peak Regional Hospital & Surgical Center in Woodland Park, Colo.
