NIH funds establish early-warning network for emerging infectious diseases
The National Institutes of Health鈥檚 National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases $17 million in grants to establish the Centers for Research in Emerging Infectious Diseases, which will support multidisciplinary investigations into how and where viruses and other pathogens emerge from wildlife and spillover to cause disease in people.
NIAID intends to provide approximately $82 million over five years to support the network.
鈥淭he CREID network will enable early warnings of emerging diseases wherever they occur, which will be critical to rapid responses,鈥 said NIAID Director Anthony Fauci, M.D. 鈥淭he knowledge gained through this research will increase our preparedness for future outbreaks.鈥
