An estimated 23.6 million Americans with employer-based health coverage spent at least 10 percent of their 2016-2017 income on premiums or out-of-pocket expenses, according to a released this week by the Commonwealth Fund. Based on the Census Bureau’s Current Population Survey, median household spending on employer-based health coverage ranged from $1,500 in Hawaii to $5,540 in South Dakota, the study found.
