A record 33,417 medical school seniors and graduates were  to U.S. residency positions today through the National Resident Matching Program, 1,518 more than last year. A record 35,185 positions were offered. Applicants include students and graduates of U.S. and international medical schools. The match results are watched because they can be predictors of future physician workforce supply and competitiveness of specialties. Of the 32,194 first-year positions offered in the Match, 15,946 were in the primary care specialties of Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Internal Medicine-Pediatrics, Internal Medicine-Primary, Pediatrics, and Pediatrics-Primary, 7.8 percent more than in 2018.
