An estimated 23% of U.S. adults under age 65 met federal guidelines for aerobic and muscle-strengthening leisure-time activity between 2010 and 2015, including 27% of men and 19% of women, according to a released today by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. State estimates for men ranged from 18% in South Dakota to 40% in the District of Columbia, and for women from 10% in Mississippi to 32% in Colorado, based on data from the National Health Interview Survey. The Department of Health and Human Services’ guidelines recommend that adults perform 150 minutes per week of moderate or 75 minutes per week of vigorous physical activity, plus muscle-strengthening activity at least two days per week. Most adults who meet the guidelines do so through leisure-time activity.
