NQF, CDC issue guide to promote appropriate use of antibiotics in hospitals
The National Quality Forum, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and Hospital Corporation of America today released a “” for creating or enhancing hospital antibiotic stewardship programs. The guide reviews and provides examples of the CDC’s Core Elements of Hospital Antibiotic Stewardship Programs, potential barriers and solutions, and sample tools and resources for implementation. “Acute-care hospitals play a critical role in the safe and appropriate use of antibiotics, and the Playbook provides a comprehensive and practical plan for hospitals to implement stewardship programs that can help improve patient outcomes and reduce antibiotic resistance,” Edward Septimus, M.D., medical director of infection prevention and epidemiology at HCA and co-chair of NQF’s National Quality Partners antibiotic stewardship action team.
