Description
Physician communication with patients and families impacts numerous outcomes including patient and family quality of life, satisfaction, trust in physicians, and health care use. Despite growing recognition of the importance of communication, gaps remain in current communication skills among both trainees and practicing clinicians. Join AHA for this session to learn how to communicate serious news to patients and families in patient-centered fashion using the SPIKES framework and how to empathically respond to emotions using the NURSE mnemonic to improve this experience for both patients and providers.
This session will be led by Julia Vermylen, M.D, MPH, a practicing palliative care physician and medical educator focused on teaching serious illness communication techniques at Northwestern University and Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
